The shoreline walk

$0

The signature free activity is the roughly 1.5-mile path between Icy Strait Point and downtown Hoonah. It is flat, scenic, and takes most people 25 to 45 minutes each way. First-time visitors often call it the most memorable part of their day ashore.

It stays free the whole way. If you are short on time or the weather turns, you can ride the shuttle one way for the views and still walk the other.

  • Flat and paved, patched in places, and muddy after rain.
  • Bring a rain shell and waterproof shoes, whatever the forecast says.
  • This is bear country. Skip the headphones and give wildlife plenty of space.
  • Accessibility: if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or has mobility limits, plan on the shuttle.

If it rains

Plan B

Hoonah is a rainforest town and it rains regularly through the cruise season. September is usually wetter than early summer. Rain does not have to end your free day: pack a rain shell, walk anyway, and use the downtown shops as your shelter. Our backup-plan guide covers weather, tides and schedule changes.
